Cluster systems are increasingly gaining market acceptance as cost-effective, high performance, server systems. Cluster systems, however, do not yet provide useful abstractions, like a Single System Image (SSI), that simplify system management, and aid the construction of higher level software. We present DSD, an approach offering transparent, and high-performance remote disk access on cluster systems. DSD can be used as a building block for providing a SSI. We describe the DSD structure, and its internal mechanisms, such as the communication protocol used for remote disk access. We present experimental results comparing the latency of local to remote disk access as well as the performance of striped remote disk access over the network against striped access on a dedicated disk array.
